In Kindergarten, we’re not just teaching the alphabet—we’re wiring the brain for reading. That’s why phonemic awareness instruction is essential, even in the first weeks of school.

Why Phonemic Awareness Is Foundational

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. It’s the foundation that supports decoding, spelling, and fluent reading.

How to Build It Daily

  • Use structured routines like Heggerty for 10–12 minutes each morning
  • Focus on one skill at a time: blending, segmenting, substituting
  • Don’t use letters, just sounds!

For Struggling Students

Use Bridge the Gap for Tier 2 support and a double dose of phonemic awareness for students who score well below benchmark.

The earlier we start, the better. Consistent phonemic awareness instruction in K–2 classrooms is the best way to prevent future reading failure.
