If your small group time feels scattered or ineffective, it’s time to align it with the Science of Reading. In grades 3–5, small groups should be data-driven, skill-specific, and progress-monitored.

What’s Wrong with the Old Model

  • Groups based on reading level = misleading
  • Round-robin reading = ineffective
  • Focus on text over skill = missed opportunity

What to Do Instead

  • Group by skill, not level (e.g., decoding, multisyllabic words, fluency, morphology)
  • Use diagnostic assessments (CORE Phonics Survey, PAST)
  • Assign targeted routines (UFLI Small Group, Phonics for Reading, fluency drills)
  • Monitor weekly and regroup every 3–4 weeks

Sample Small Group Flow (20–25 min)

  1. Quick warm-up (phonics or morphology)
  2. Decoding practice with aligned text
  3. Fluency or comprehension activity
  4. Exit ticket or oral read for data

Small groups are your most powerful intervention tool. When aligned with structured literacy, they become accelerators of growth, not just babysitting stations.
