The Science of Reading Isn’t a Curriculum. Stop Buying It Like One

A field-wide reset for every leader who’s been sold a ‘Science of Reading-aligned’ product this year.

Every vendor at every education conference this year slapped ‘Science of Reading aligned’ onto their booth banner. Districts have collectively spent hundreds of millions of dollars chasing this label. And yet, in too many of those districts, third-grade reading scores look exactly like they did before the purchase. Here’s why: the Science of Reading is not a thing you buy. It’s a body of evidence about how the brain learns to read. And no curriculum, no matter how shiny, will deliver results unless the adults using it understand the science underneath it.

What the Science of Reading Actually Is

The Science of Reading is the cumulative body of research from cognitive science, neuroscience, linguistics, education, and developmental psychology about how humans learn to read. It tells us that reading is not natural, that it must be explicitly taught, and that there is a knowable sequence the brain follows to become a skilled reader.

Frameworks like the Simple View of Reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope are the maps. Curricula are the vehicles. You can have a great map and the wrong vehicle or a great vehicle and a driver who can’t read the map. Either way, you don’t arrive.

Why ‘Aligned’ Programs Often Fail

  • Teachers were never trained in the science itself, only in the program’s procedures.
  • Schools layer the new program on top of legacy practices (three-cueing, leveled readers as a primary diagnostic, balanced literacy workshop models) without removing what conflicts.
  • Coaching is absent or surface-level, so when something doesn’t work, teachers default to what they’ve always done.
  • Leaders confuse purchase with implementation. Buying is not implementing.

The Real Implementation Sequence

1. Build adult knowledge first.

Before a single materials box arrives, your educators need foundational training in the Science of Reading. Not a one-day workshop. Sustained learning a book study, a course, a learning community, that builds shared mental models.

2. Audit what’s currently in classrooms.

What practices, language, and materials conflict with the science? Those don’t get to stay just because they’re familiar.

3. Choose a curriculum that fits and use it with fidelity.

Once educators understand the why, the what becomes a tool, not a script. They can use the program well because they know what it’s trying to do.

4. Coach relentlessly.

Coaching is where curriculum becomes practice. Without it, you’ll be back at this same conversation in three years with new boxes.

If your Science of Reading ‘rollout’ didn’t start with adult learning, you didn’t roll out the Science of Reading. You rolled out a product.

The Science of Reading is a body of evidence, not a brand. The schools getting real results have stopped chasing labels and started building the adult expertise that makes any aligned curriculum actually work.

CSAS designs Science of Reading implementation plans that start where they should with your educators. Schedule a complimentary readiness conversation to map your district’s path from purchase to practice.
