Effort isn’t the problem. Alignment is.
Walk into almost any school in America right now and you’ll see exhausted teachers. They’re differentiating, intervening, looping in families, and staying late to plan. And yet, the reading data won’t budge. If you’re a principal staring at flat scores year after year, the instinct is to push harder. But the truth is harder to swallow: effort without an aligned system simply isn’t enough.
The Effort Trap
Most underperforming schools don’t have a work ethic problem. They have an alignment problem. Teachers are using different programs, different language, different sequences and students pay the price every time they move between grades, classrooms, or interventions.
When a kindergartner is taught letter sounds one way, a first-grade teacher uses a different method, and the reading specialist uses a third, the child’s brain is asked to rebuild its reading map every year. That’s not differentiation. That’s chaos with good intentions.
What Aligned Schools Do Differently
- They commit to one shared instructional framework rooted in the Science of Reading.
- They use the same scope and sequence across grades and across general education, intervention, and special education.
- They invest in coaching not just curriculum to ensure the framework lives in classrooms, not just binders.
- They protect the master schedule so every K–3 classroom has a non-negotiable, uninterrupted literacy block.
Notice what’s not on that list: a new program. Most schools don’t need a new program. They need fidelity to the one they already have and the leadership infrastructure to make fidelity possible.
The Leadership Diagnostic
Before you buy another curriculum or schedule another PD day, ask these five questions:
- Can every teacher in my building name the five components of effective reading instruction?
- Do my intervention teachers use the same scope and sequence as my classroom teachers?
- Is phonemic awareness explicitly taught daily in K–1?
- Do my walkthroughs measure what students are doing not just what teachers are presenting?
- Has any teacher in my building received job-embedded coaching in the past 30 days?
If you said ‘no’ or ‘I’m not sure’ to two or more of these, your scores aren’t flat because of effort. They’re flat because the system around the effort isn’t holding.
| Stat to remember: Schools that align curriculum, coaching, and assessment around the Science of Reading typically see double-digit gains in 18–24 months without changing who’s teaching. |
Working harder is not a strategy. Working aligned is. The schools that finally move the needle on literacy aren’t the ones with the most passionate teachers, they’re the ones with the most coherent systems.
