Why Your Best Efforts at RTI Might Be Backfiring and How to Fix It Fast
You’re Not Alone… but You Might Be Doing It Backwards
You’ve pulled the data.
You’ve grouped the students.
You’ve even carved out a sacred 30 minutes a day for Tier 2 instruction.
But somehow, students in intervention aren’t closing the gap fast enough.
Sound familiar?
Here’s what research shows—and what most RTI teams never realize:
The problem isn’t what you’re teaching in intervention… it’s that students never learned the pre-skills.
The Research You Didn’t Know You Needed
- According to the National Center on Intensive Intervention, students require 30 -50 practice opportunities per skill to achieve mastery, most intervention sessions barely offer 10.
- Louisa Moats and Carol Tolman emphasize that phonological awareness must be automatic before phonics instruction can stick.
- Dr. Anita Archer reminds us: “Don’t practice errors. Practice success.”
The “Missing Skill” Audit: A 3-Minute RTI Game-Changer
Before launching your next small group, ask:
Can each student fluently perform the prerequisite skill?
- If you’re teaching digraphs, can they blend and segment CVC words with ease?
What is the error type?
- Decoding? Sound substitution? Blending? If you can’t pinpoint it, you can’t fix it.
How many reps did this student get yesterday and were they successful?
- Use a simple tally system. High reps = high growth.
Here’s What Works Instead
Laser-Focused Skill Mapping
- Identify each student’s exact instructional gap. If they’re stuck on phoneme segmentation, they’re not ready for closed syllables.
Micro-Drills with Mastery in Mind
- Use 3-minute warm-ups at the start of every RTI block: blending boards, Elkonin boxes, fluency frames.
Progress Monitor Every 5 Sessions
- Use DIBELS subtests, quick probes, or oral reading checks. You’ll catch stagnation before it turns into failure.
Let’s Rethink Intervention
The best intervention isn’t more of the same. It’s more of what works—at the right time, in the right way.
