Too often, teachers see Tier 2 as something that happens outside the classroom—by someone else. But powerful intervention can (and should) happen within your literacy block, alongside Tier 1 instruction.

MTSS Framework Refresher

  • Tier 1: Universal, high-quality instruction
  • Tier 2: Targeted small group support
  • Tier 3: Intensive individualized instruction

How to Integrate Tier 2 into the Day

  • Use Acadience data to group students by skill
  • Carve out 20–30 minutes for intervention (rotate during center time)
  • Use programs like Bridge the Gap, Sound Partners, or Phonics for Reading

Tips for Success

  • Keep groups flexible—update every 3–4 weeks
  • Focus on foundational skill gaps
  • Avoid giving “more of the same” use different tools than Tier 1

Tier 2 works best when it’s built into the flow of the day—not when it’s siloed. You are your students’ best chance at success, so lead the intervention from your classroom.
